   Course Director's Profile

Hesham Abdalla, Paediatric SpR, Chairman of Emerging Clinical Leaders Network

Hesham is a Paediatric SpR working in Manchester who has a strong vision of distributed clinical leadership. He is a founding member and current chair of the Emerging Clinical Leaders Network (eCLN). This is a new network based at NHS North West which is supporting and encouraging frontline clinicians– from junior doctors to nurses and allied health professionals- to work with patients to improve services

The eCLN was formed to share knowledge regarding leadership, facilitate learning from others’ experiences and to inspire colleagues to make the link between leadership and quality improvement. Work-streams include a flagship project that introduces a cohort of junior doctors to Action Learning Sets whilst leading Quality Improvement projects. The aims are to develop their leadership skills and encourage them to take ownership for solving problems affecting the service for their patients.

In his role as a “Darzi Fellow”, seconded to the Strategic Health Authority, NHS Northwest, Hesham has played a pivotal role in planning, designing and implementing children’s services at a strategic level and thereby realising the local vision of High Quality Care for All. This included chairing working parties which developed Children's Care Pathways in Urgent Care, CAMHS and Disability services

In recent years there has been an explosion of interest in the concept of using Patient Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) as an proxy measure for quality of care. Hesham is on the Project Board for an innovative study run by the RCPCH developing PREMs in children. This is a Department of Health funded initiative which aims, for the first time, to produce validated criteria for eliciting parent and child experience of urgent care.
